Rita Moreno, who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Anita in the 1961 film version, will feature as Valentina, a re-conceived and expanded version of the character of Doc, the owner of the corner store in which Tony works. The new version comes from Spielberg, along with Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner.
The film has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway musical, which was written by Arthur Laurents with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins. Tony Award winner Justin Peck will choreograph the musical numbers in the film, alongside the music of Tony Award-winning producer Kevin McCollum and Academy Award-nominated producer Kristie Macosko Krieger.
We certainly can't wait to hear some of our favourite songs through fresh voices in the new take on the classic. West Side Story is released in cinemas on December 18, 2020.Read More
