A hero is forever dependent on a villain. The bigger the villain the greater the hero. But when a narrative works to show only the life of a villain, the plot gets dense. Playing one of the most iconic comic villains comes not with good acting skills but a grit to get in to the skin of a character not seen in real life. Actor Joaquin Phoenix seems to have just that. The Gladiator actor has reportedly been approached to play the Clown Prince of Crime, Joker.
Warner Bros. and Todd Philips plan to create a new banner for the DC comics’ iconic villain and Phoenix seems to be the preferred star. While studio negotiations are not yet underway, Variety reported that Phoenix has agreed to the role after mulling over it for some time. WB however, has not yet made an official statement.
Leonardo Di Caprio was a top contender for the role but Phillips seemed particular about Phoenix. While Phoenix may be set for the new origin series of Joker, Jared Leto will continue to play the villain in Suicide Squad 2. In fact, Phoenix will have no effect on the ending meted out to Joker’s character in the film and in the future series of that banner.
Phillips will be joined by Scott silver in penning down the film which will delve deeper in to the background of Joker and what made him a criminal mastermind. Phoenix was last seen in Gus Van Sant film He Won’t Get Far on Foot.
