Ready for reruns of the Oscars tonight? Hey! This is Justalkin brought to you by in.com. There were plenty of changes - some good, some bad, and as much drama as it contains, on this podcast, let’s take a look at what happened at the Academy Awards.
One of the biggest changes that the ceremony had this year, was the idea of not having a host. And we did have our doubts. But somehow, I don’t think anybody massively missed having a host! Celebrities came up on stage to announce nominations and give and receive awards. So it was maybe for the best - the award ceremony moved on pretty quickly and was almost an hour shorter than it usually is. Also it’s 2019 so they know finally discovered the millennial attention span.
Queen and Adam Lambert’s performance
The best thing that came out of not having a host, was that there was music instead of the regular opening speech! And who better than Queen! They came on stage for a kickass performance, and they’ve been touring with Adam Lambert so he was with the too. Both him and Rami Malek had big shoes to fill in - Adam Lambert touring with Queen, singing his songs, and Rami Malek playing his character in Bohemian Rhapsody, but it worked out well - Rami Malek won the Oscar for the best actor for Bohemian Rhapsody!
Rami Malek’s fall
Rami Malek fell from stardom - a little too quickly! He won the Academy Award for best actor for his role in Bohemian Rhapsody - his first ever Oscar, and the first ever actor of Arab descent to win one. He made a really great speech but on his way off stage, he fell. He had to be helped up by paramedics but he had his Oscar, he was fine and there are pictures of him partying later.
Lady Gaga and Olivia Coleman’s speeches
Lady Gaga had quite a night! She lifted the trophy for her original song Shallow from the movie ‘A Star is born’. And she performed it live on stage with Bradley Cooper and oh my god the intimacy of that performance! You have to find someone who looks at you the way Bradley Cooper looks at Lady Gaga! She gave an incredibly emotional speech while she accepted her award, and thanked Bradley for, I quote, “believing in us!” God she can make us cry. Another speech - Olivia Coleman’s - she won the Oscar for her role as the Queen in the movie ‘The Favorite’. Some of the speeches were cut off if they got too lengthy but it’s the Oscar for the Best Actress! So when they tried cutting off speech, she did what any mature adult who won an Oscar would do - she blew raspberries at the production staff.
Celebrity Couples on the red carpet and the party!
It’s the Oscars, so stars try their best to make their presence felt because let’s face it - there are too many of them. Tired of looking hot and well dressed, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas resorted to blowing Raspberries at each other. Kendall Jenner turned up with her mother in a barely-there slit dress and got people talking. Newly-weds Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were at the after-party. Miley said they made it to the party even though they missed the award ceremony, because it’s their thing - they’ve been coming together for the last 7 years!
Melissa McCarthy and Bryan Tyree Henry's whacky costumes
There was no host at the Oscars this year, so it was up to the people who were gonna make announcements and speeches to make sure nobody was getting bored. And if someone can do that job well it’s Melissa McCarthy, and she had Bryan Tyree Henry keeping up with her antics. They had to announce the nominees for best costume designer, so they came up on stage - in costume. They spoofed ‘The Favorite’, with royal clothes covered with stuffed bunnies! But after this elaborate dress-up for the stage, she went to the party in a tracksuit!
Black Panther - First movie from Marvel Studios to win an Academy Award
Black Panther had a lot of firsts even as a movie. It had a lot of firsts at the Academy Awards as well. Ludwig Goransson won for Best Original Score, Hannah Beachler won for Best Production Design, and Ruth E Carter won for Best Costume Design. This was the first time a movie from Marvel Studios won an Academy Award. One of the most amazing movies that came out last year, also nominated for Best Picture, but Green Book won.
A first for Black women - Production and Costume Design
The women that I just spoke about, made history today. They were the first black women in their respective categories to win those categories. Ruth E Carter said, Marvel may have created a Superhero, but through costume design, they created an African King out of Black Panther! Hannah Beachler was the first black woman to even be nominated for the Academy Award for Production Design - and made further history by winning it! That’s a real-life superhero movie being written right there!
Guneet Monga’s production winning an Oscar
India’s only connection in terms of films at the Oscars this year was a movie called ‘Period. End of Sentence’. Produced by Guneet Monga’s company ‘Sikhya Entertainment’, shot in UP, it talks about the stigma associated with menstruation, and it went on to win the Oscar for the Best Documentary short. From being conceptualised in a school, to shooting it, to winning an Oscar! They’ve come a long way.
The Big Winners
The nominations were not such big surprises. But the winners and their speeches were. It must’ve been the hardest decision for Rami Malek to sign on to play Freddie Mercury but he won the Oscar for Best Actor. Olivia Colman won Best Actress for playing the Queen in The Favorite, and Alfonso Quaron won Best Director for Roma. Everyone thought Roma was the sure-shot winner for the best picture, but Green Book took it home!
That was the night so you have your list of must-watch movies if you haven’t already. Roma, Black Panther, A Star is Born, The Favorite, and the best film, Green Book. You’re gonna see bits and pieces of the ceremony cos they always make it their way into memes! This is JusTalkin brought to you by in.com.
