Film critics and filmmakers can rarely be friends. Karan Johar, however, seems to be a rare exception. The man who wears many hats was at the launch of senior journalist and film critic Shubhra Gupta. Chatty as usual Johar seemed to be in great spirits and why wouldn't he? Gupta is perhaps one of the most difficult critics to impress. So when she writes a book called 50 Films That Changed Bollywood and you find a mention in it? There's enough there to celebrate.Interestingly the film that found a mention at the panel discussion was Johar’s 2006 blockbuster Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. The Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan starrer may have made 100cr plus worldwide but didn’t quite impress the critics. Shubhra wasn’t completely convinced though she did find it better than most. Johar himself was critical of the film on hindsight. He said and we quote:
“I think it's a flawed film and I think that mistakes in the film are entirely mine. I think I tried to do things. I tried to do something fresh and groundbreaking and then halfway through I also got scared. Just like my sun sign Gemini, I became two people in the film. I think I should have been just one person with one solid conviction. The root of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna was that it was an intimate film about two couples. Then stars stepped in and I started adhering to star imagery and star persona over and above the core content. Like if you read the screenplay of Alvida, it is infinitely superior to the film. Some parts were overcast, some parts were overly opulent for no reason. It took away the intimacy and paved the way for the mainstream. As a result, it has a neither here or there feel to it. While some scenes of the film are strong and powerful the other scenes are ham and catering. Something they shouldn’t have been. It’s the only film in my career that I would want to do again and will do Alvida and hopefully, I will get it right.”So there you have it. Karan Johar saying that he WILL make Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna again. Who do you think will play the two couples now? We recommend Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh.
