Fans celebrate Akshaya Mohanty aka Khoka Bhai’s birthday
Today marks the 81st birth anniversary of legendary singer, lyricist and musician Akshaya Mohanty, popularly known as Khoka Bhai. Based primarily on contemporary themes and ballads of Odia legends, Khoka Bhai made several contributions to Odia Bhajans, Odissi songs, folk songs and film songs.
Unlike many of our modern stars, Khoka Bhai didn’t record his first song until he was 50. At 22, he was working for government services in Cuttack. While he was still working there, he became a lyricist in All India Radio in 1956 and soon became an approved composer there.
His first song as a playback singer was Gori Gori Gori in the 1959 Odia movie Maa. Khoka Bhai is credited with 129 songs in Odia films. In 1965, he worked as a composer with filmmaker Nitai Palit for the movie Malayan. Rakata Talamala, a song from the film topped the charts.
According to a report in The Telegraph, Mustaque Nadiadwala from the Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment based in Mumbai, was reportedly in talks with the Akshaya Mohanty Trust to produce a biography on the genius. Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment is associated with Bollywood films like the Housefull series, 2 States and Phantom. The proposed name of Khoka Bhai’s biopic is ‘He Phaguna Tume’.
