When social media got plastered with candid pictures of Ranbir Kapoor and Mahira Khan, tattlers stopped to speculate over the possibility of a relationship. While some tried to make a love connection, others seemed awed and disgusted by the fact that Mahira, a Pakistani actress being a woman could wear a backless halter dress and also smoke a cigarette while wearing it. Enraged, social media responded in nothing less than bitter hate.
Mahira, despite her strength, seems to have taken a blow. Her words during an interview with Something Haute implied she was sorry for taking the smoke break. “To be honest, I understand where all the criticism came from and it didn’t come from a place of hate. I’m not talking about the trolls but those who were genuinely disappointed to see those pictures. It’s the same disappointment that my nani or my mamoo would have felt seeing that. So even now when I meet an older lady who says that she didn’t like the pictures, I’m quick to apologize.”
The film industry poured in their support but Mahira still seems to be stuck in the apologetic cycle. For her sake we say, no woman is answerable for wearing a white halter dress with a man.Ranbir and Mahira were seen smoking together in New York but the repercussion of those whiffs of nicotine were felt back in her home continent, where she was slut shamed. Being linked to Ranbir Kapoor romantically was only the sweet part of the gossips. Ranbir backed her and condemned hyperbolising those images, “Everyone has their own interpretation. Everyone has their own set of values. Everyone has an opinion. You can hear them but you needn’t subscribe to them. At the end of the day, one should just live and let live and focus on more important things. Mahira is a great performer and an entertainer. One should ideally just engage with her at just that level,” the actor told Filmfare during an interview.
