Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming movie, Padmavati will not be seeing a smooth sailing at the theatres as threats against the film’s screening is already making rounds. The threats have been made against the film’s alleged portrayal of a love angle between Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji. The latest to threaten burning theatres which screen Padmavati is Telangana BJP MLA, Raja Singh, a Rajput himself.
Singh claims Bhansali is degrading Rajput culture and distorting history in film. “The fact was that Khilji had attacked Chittorgarh, causing mass self-immolation (Jauhar) by more than 16,000 women who lived in the fort at the time,” he said in a viral Facebook post.
While it is not certain if Bhansali is indeed portraying such a side of Padmavati, Singh seems to have missed the point that the movie is a work of fiction and not strictly a historical depiction on screen. Bhansali nonetheless wiser and not new to threats has already insured the film for Rs. 105 crore reported Hindustan Times.
Period dramas in India have a history of threats ahead of releases. Ashutosh Gowarikar too felt the brunt of the self-styled keepers of Indian culture from the Rajput community before release of ‘Jodha Akbar’. The Karni Sena is one such active rabble rouser and they are on the job this time too posing threats to the Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh starrer film.
This BJP MLA is not the first to terrorize filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Union Minister Girija Singh has also taken up the task asking Bhansali to dare make films on other religions, as per Hindustan Times. He was followed by another controversial Union Minister Uma Bharti who suggested the filmmaker get detractors in the Censor board and get his film cleared by historians.
As ministers and right wing organizations set to the task to give Padmavati a difficult time, we can’t wait for its December 1 release. Read More
