Earlier, there was quite a stir in the media when a case had been filed against veteran actress Bhanupriya by her housemaid's mother. This case, registered at the Samalkota town Police Station in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh by one Ms P Prabhavati, who is said to be the mother of the 14-year-old girl Sandhiya whom Bhanupriya had employed as her housemaid. Prabhavati stated in the complaint that the actress had employed her daughter about a year-and-a-half back, with the promise of paying her a remuneration of Rs. 10,000 a month but had not paid this even once during this whole period.
The complaint also went on to state that Bhanupriya's brother had been sexually abusing the minor girl Sandhiya and also that Prabhavati was not allowed to meet her daughter when she came to Chennai in search of her. Following this complaint, Bhanupriya refuted all these claims and stated that it was actually Sandhiya who had stolen over 30 sovereigns worth of jewellery and about 1.5 lakh rupees in cash.
With these allegations and counter-allegations going on in one side, Child Protective Services rescued Sandhiya and lodged her in protective custody in Chennai. There was some confusion over the handling of this case as the complaint was lodged in Andhra Pradesh but Sandhiya had been living with Bhanupriya in Chennai. Now, we have received confirmation that AP Balala Hakkula Sangam (APBHS) has approached the Director General of Police (DGP) of Vijayawada, requesting that severe action be taken against Bhanupriya for illegal trafficking, violation of human rights as well as for abetting illegal child labour and also under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
