Vijay Deverakonda's 2017 movie Arjun Reddy broke the box office and became a trendsetting movie in Tollywood. Starring Shalini Pandey as the female lead and directed by Sandeep Vanga for Bhadrakali Pictures, this movie went on to become one of the highest grossers of all time. Following this success, Arjun Reddy was decided to be remade in Tamil as Varmaa and Hindi as Kabir Singh. Chiyaan Vikram's son Dhruv was selected to play the lead in the Tamil version, with acclaimed director Bala helming the project.
It has now been revealed that Varmaa is being produced by Bala on a first copy basis for Mukesh Mehta's E4 Entertainment. The movie's shoot began in early 2018 and was said to be progressing well. Despite a delay in the shoot due to the Tamil Film Producers Council strike, the shoot was wrapped up by the end of 2018. Varma's trailer was released in January by Suriya but was met with very mixed responses. The success of Arjun Reddy made comparisons inevitable and most of the people found the intensity and essence of the original missing in Varma.
It was originally announced that Varmaa would be hitting the theatres for the Valentine's Day weekend but was recently announced to have a postponement in release due to a delay in obtaining a certificate from the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). Now Mukesh Mehta has released a statement stating that he is planning to re-shoot major portions or even the entire movie with a different director and there are reports that there might be changes in the cast too. It looks like E4 Entertainment will go to any lengths to ensure a satisfactory Arjun Reddy remake hits Kollywood. Stay tuned for updates!
