After the Pollachi serial sexual abuse cases came to light over the past few days, there is a lot of angst and frustration on social media amongst Tamil circles. Among the trending hashtags are #PollachiSexualAbuse and #ArrestPollachiRapists, clearly showing the anger among people against the perpetrators of such heinous crimes. Vishal’s upcoming cop story Ayogya has sexual crimes against women at its core and after a point, the corrupt protagonist turns over a new leaf and nabs the culprits. The film is a remake of NTR’s Hit Temper which was also recently remade as Simmba in Bollywood with much success. The crimes against women angle was retained in Simmba though quite a few other changes were made in the film.
On Monday evening, a short shooting spot clip from Ayogya was released on Twitter by the makers through regular social media influencers. It’s a heated monologue showing an animated Vishal saying that people who indulge in sex abuse crimes shouldn’t be shown any mercy. The makers must’ve thought that it’s a cool way to increase the buzz on their film by riding on a social issue which is red hot at the moment. But the move clearly backfired as prominent people on Twitter didn’t take well to the video. The usual trolls and abuses were also at it big time and the makers were forced to take the video off after an hour or so. But by then, the video had gone viral in a big way (for all the wrong reasons).
We hope the Ayogya team hasn’t done any irreversible damage to their movie’s fortunes with this publicity stunt gone horribly wrong!
