Born on 24 January 1945, Ghai was the student of FTII, Pune. After completing his course there, he moved to Mumbai. In 1965, he entered the Filmfare Acting Talent contest. Out of thousands of participants, only three got selected. The selected three were Rajesh Khanna, Dheeraj Kumar & Subhash Ghai. While Rajesh Khanna got a couple of offers, after struggling for a few years even Dheeraj Kumar managed to get some offers in the lead role, But Ghai was not that lucky. He was offered only small roles in films. He played small parts in movies like Aradhana, Taqdeer & a few more. Around the same time, he got an offer of a Punjabi film and that too as the lead hero!

The film was titled Sherni and his leading lady was Radha Saluja.
It was during the same time that he got some good offers from Hindi films too. While acting in Sherni and the Hindi film Gumrah, Ghai started taking a deep interest in direction. He even started writing scripts.
Sherni, a masala film, did well but Ghai was now more interested in getting behind the camera. He went on to become one of most successful director and producer of Hindi film Industry, also called as the Showman of Bollywood.
After almost 40 years, he returned to Punjabi Cinema with Double Di Trouble as the producer. While at it, he promised that he will produce more Punjabi Films in the future. But seems like the average performance of the film did not encourage him to produce more films in Punjabi. Even on Hindi film front, he could not repeat the success of his previous films under his own direction.
