At the Chennai city box office, it was a weekend dominated by the new Hollywood release Captain Marvel which released in English and Tamil, and also had 3D and Imax 3D versions to attract the audience. The film grossed a fantastic 2.14 crore in its opening 3 days in Chennai, and comfortably sealed the top spot. Thadam followed in the second spot, adding 60 lakhs in its second weekend, for a 10 days total Chennai gross of 2.35 crore. Thadam can be called a superhit now and is a huge break for Arun Vijay as a solo lead hero.
The other 3 new releases Boomerang, Badla and Sathru took the 3rd, 4th and 5th spots respectively grossing 49 lakhs, 16 lakhs and 8 lakhs respectively in their opening 3 days. Boomerang and Sathru don’t promise much while Badla is expected to have a good run in Chennai city with limited shows.
The sensational 90 ML has lost its fizz almost completely. All that controversy and debate surrounding it last weekend haven’t helped the film one bit. It has grossed 1.31 crore in Chennai at the end of 10 days, adding just 7 lakhs in its 2nd weekend. LKG follows in the 7th spot, grossing 2.85 crore in the city after 17 days of its run. As we’ve said earlier, the film has done enough good already. From Bollywood, we have Luka Chuppi and Gully Boy in the Top 10, with a Chennai gross of 41 lakhs (10 days) and 1.31 crore (25 days) respectively.
