Kanaa was one of the important films in Tamil cinema last year. Despite releasing in an extremely crowded weekend with films like Maari 2, Adangamaru, KGF, Seethakaathi and Silukuvarpatti Singam, it went from strength to strength from the time it got very good reviews at its pre-release press show. Among these releases, Kanaa was the only one which braved Viswasam and Petta after Pongal, and had a few shows in multiplexes in the urban centres of TN.
The film was released in the state by Aarudhra Films. We have official confirmation that Kanaa’s lifetime TN gross is 18 CR with a theatrical share of 8.5 cr. It is an extremely profitable venture for producer Sivakarthikeyan and all his stakeholders. The film’s total budget must have been covered by its theatrical share itself. This success has evidently given a lot of motivation for Sivakarthikeyan to continue his production ventures with his team, despite being really busy as a leading hero. His second production is already making brisk progress.
Kanaa has also started bagging important awards already, with Aishwarya Rajesh leading from the front for her extraordinary performance. It is a big favourite to notch many more awards in the coming months. The film’s director Arunraja Kamaraj is now busy writing his second film.
