As expected by trade pundits, Thala Ajith’s Viswasam has emerged as his highest grosser in Tamil Nadu (crossing Vedalam) and also when we consider the worldwide gross total (crossing Vivegam). At the end of its 2nd weekend, the film is reported to have grossed Rs 95 crore in Tamil Nadu according to trustworthy trade sources. It will cross the 100 crore mark very soon and looks good to gross a lot more in the days and weeks to come.
It must be noted that the film’s TN distributor KJR Studios had famously claimed a couple of days back that Viswasam had grossed Rs 125 crore in TN after 8 days itself. The authenticity of this claim is still being debated heatedly in Kollywood. Viswasam’s theatrical share in the state has crossed Rs 52 crore after 11 days, thereby making it the first ever movie sold on Rs 50 crore+ MG (minimum guarantee basis pre-release theatrical business) to achieve breakeven in the state successfully.
There have been a few recent high profile films which failed to achieve breakeven and met with losses after being sold for high MGs in the state. Some other recent big grossers like Mersal and 2.0 were own releases by the respective producers, Sri Thenandal Films and Lyca Productions, thereby leaving this impressive record in Viswasam’s kitty.
