Today is International Women’s Day and women all over the world are creating a niche for themselves in the various domains they are in, be it in a professional segment or a domestic terrain. In the film industry too, perceptions are changing and we get to see a difference in attitude towards women actors. One can say Tamil film industry is one such place where there are quite a few women-centric films which are being produced and also scale success at the box office.
Nayanthara, Samantha and Jyothika are some of the heroines who are able to shoulder an entire film and carry it on to the victory mark. This is definitely not to play down other heroines. There are plenty of others who are making their respective marks, including Trisha, Keerthy Suresh, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, and others. If we just see last year, we have had films such as Kolamaavu Kokila, U Turn and Kaatrin Mozhi whose stories are totally centred around the heroines Nayanthara, Samantha and Jyothika.
One will have to be in the theatre to understand the hooting and applause when these ladies names appear in the credit list. Such is their fan base. It is also an encouraging feature that Kollywood is slowly warming up to the idea of married women in the industry, the best examples being Jyothika and Samantha. We would like to believe that it is just the beginning and there is more to come. While on that note, we wish all the women out there a very very happy Women’s Day!
