Ever since the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu - Dr. J. Jayalalithaa passed away in 2016, a number of filmmakers have been wanting to make a biopic on her colourful life. Also, we had earlier reported that director A. Priyadhaarshini would be directing a biopic on Jayalalithaa's life, which had been titled The Iron Lady. On September 20, the title of the film was revealed by filmmaker AR Murugadoss, of Sarkar fame. On Jayalalithaa's second death anniversary, the makers announced that Nithya Menen would be reprising the politician in the film. A poster was also released and Nithya looked like a splitting replica of Jayalalithaa, in that.
Now, today on the occasion of her birth anniversary, another latest update has come up about the release date of this film! Director Priyadhaarshini has taken to her Twitter account to reveal that the film is all set to release in 2020. She wrote, “#OFFICIAL #THEIRONLADY #JJayalalithaabiopic to hit screens on worldwide "20-2-2020" #Amma2020 (sic).” Currently, pre-production work is on and soon the film will go on floors. Reportedly, Varalaxmi will be essaying the role of Sasikala, Jayalalithaa’s constant companion and close confidante.
As many as five biopics on Jayalalithaa have been announced so far. Bharathiraja plans to direct one, while director Vijay, Adithya Bharadwaj and Dasari Narayana Rao have also set their sights on directing their version. Interestingly, the title of this movie has a Hollywood connection. Margaret Thatcher’s biopic also had the same title. Meanwhile, there are also reports that director Gautham Menon is also working on a similar biopic, though as a web series.
