Director Sundar C's last release - Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven didn't fare too well at the box office due to mixed reactions for the film. He will now be targeting to hit the bulls eye with his next film with actor Vishal, which will be bankrolled by Lyca Productions. As for Vishal, he is currently busy shooting for debut director Venkat Mohan's Ayogya, which is said to be based on Jr NTR's Temper. The official word on Vishal's next with Sundar C came out from the director's daughter, Anandita Sundar, in her recent interview to a popular media house.
When she was asked about her father's upcoming directorial plans and also about the status of the historical epic - Sangamithra, Anandita said, "Nothing can be told about Sangamithra for now as there is no progress. The film is currently shelved, but things might change in future and the film could probably go on floors, but for now, nothing is sure. As people know, appa (Sundar C) is doing his next film with Vishal and Tamannaah. I am very excited for that film. My family is really close with Vishal and he has already asked me to come to the shooting spot when they start to shoot."
Sangamithra was launched in a grand manner at the Cannes Festival with Jayam Ravi, Arya and Shruti Haasan announced as the leads. However, Shruti backed out of the project due to creative differences with director Sundar C and she was replaced by Bollywood diva Disha Patani. Touted to be made on a mammoth scale budget, AR Rahman was signed on as the music composer for this historical epic, marking his first time collaboration with Sundar C. It is definitely not an easy task to fund a film of this spectacular scale and looks like Thenandal Studios Limited (TSL) needs much more time to get financially efficient to produce Sangamithra.
Post the release of Vijay's Mersal, TSL has been facing issues in showing developments in their other films. SJ Suryah's Iravaakaalam is one long awaited film that hasn't seen any development for quite sometime. Similarly, Ashok Selvan's Oxygen is also stuck in midway without any progress and the director Ananda Krishnan has moved on to his next venture with Vijay Antony. TSL is also bankrolling Dhanush's second directorial venture. With all these projects coming to a halt at various stages, when is Thenandal Studios going to get back up and ensure that these films see the day of light?
