Directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and produced by Kamal Haasan, Magalir Mattum released on this day (25th February 1994), 25 years back and is celebrating its silver jubilee today. Inspired by the English film 9 to 5, Magalir Mattum also featured Kamal in an interesting cameo along with three live-wires Oorvashi, Rohini and Revathi. Nassar played the character of the creepy boss Mookkan, in the office these lovely ladies work in. The film was a phenomenal hit those days and one can even say it portrayed the actual #MeToo movement.
Incidentally, Oorvashi was the only actress to have featured in the 2017 Magalir Mattum that was directed by Bramma - featuring Jyothika, Bhanupriya and Saranya Ponvannan. While reminiscing about her role and working in the 1994 film, Oorvashi was quoted as saying, “One day Kamal sir asked me to come to his office and choose one of the roles in the story. I was initially very keen to take on Paappamma’s (Rohini's) role as I had not done anything like that before. But later I settled for Janaki’s as I felt people could relate to it.”
Magalir Mattum was a runaway hit which crossed over a 100 days at the box office. Screenplay was written by Crazy Mohan, who brought in his signature style of humour to the story. Late actor Nagesh’s portrayal as a corpse was one of the topmost highlights of the film, with reviews stating that it was the ‘most live’ performance ever for a dead body.
