The Karthi - Rakul Preet Singh starrer Dev, directed by debutant Rajath Ravishankar, is fast losing steam at the box office. After a below par opening weekend, the film had a huge drop on Monday. The writing is clearly on the wall, and one wonders if the film will have a decent show count in its 2nd week after the release of films like LKG and Kanne Kalaimaane. Dev grossed about 10.4 crore in TN after its opening 4 days, with the Chennai city gross being 1.66 crore. The film could gross just 11 lakhs in Chennai on Monday!
According to trade experts, the film’s lifetime TN theatrical share may just reach 7 crore, resulting in substantial losses to the TN distributors. We had reported earlier that the TN rights of Dev were worth close to 17 crore. There are reports now that the film has been trimmed by up to 15 minutes; this is a massive, desperate post-release edit in the hope of reviving the film’s fortunes at the ticket window.
To engage and attract the audience more, the Dev team has also come up with a super bike contest, in which they will gift two lucky winners the BMW super bike that Karthi rides in the film.
