For the past one week, the screenings for the Kerala State Film Awards have been taking place, with the jury going through a list of more than 50 films marking the winners across different categories. With the Malayalam film industry being a staunch contributor to content-driven subjects in 2018, the team is having a tough time balancing new talents with the veterans of the industry.
One of the most awaited award announcements would be for that of the Best Actor. Fahadh Faasil, who had a terrific year with three different films – Njan Prakashan, Carbon, and Varathan – is the frontrunner for the award, along with Tovino Thomas who had four films in Oru Kuprasidha Payyan, Theevandi, Maradona and Ente Ummante Peru. Jayasurya for Captain and Njan Marykutty, Joju George for Joseph, Dileep for Kammara Sambhavam are among others in contention. For the Best Actress category, Manju Warrier has two of her outings in Ami and Odiyan, while Urvashi stands next with Aravindante Athidikal and Ente Ummante Peru. Aishwarya Lekshmi for Varathan would also be an interesting choice.
While Sathyan Anthikad, Shaji N Karun and TV Chandran are the favorites for the Best Director, unconfirmed reports say that there are chances that a newbie could bag it as well. With so many films in contention, it is really not going to be an easy choice for this award.
The state awards will be announced either on the 28th of February or the 1st of March. Noted filmmaker Kumar Sahni heads the jury, along with Dr KP Poker, Sherry Govindan, George Kithu, KG Jayan and others.
