Suhasini Mani Ratnam is a multifaceted personality. She has dabbled in acting, direction, and dialogue writing in the film industry so far. But it looks like there is also a different art form that the Sindhu Bairavai heroine is proficient in. She took part in a Bharatnatyam recital in Chennai’s well-known dance school Sarasalaya’s platinum jubilee event on Sunday, the 17th February. As the name would give an idea to the readers, it is the dance school of the famous K J Sarasa.
Suhasini had learned Bharatnatyam from K J Sarasa long ago. She was quoted as saying, “I was 13 or 14 when I came to Chennai from Paramakudi. A couple of months later, I joined KJ Sarasa’s school of Bharatnatyam. I was not too much into it but my guru made me learn four to five items. I did not have an 'arangetram' per se but performed at our Eldams Road house where around 100 guests had come in”.
After that day, till the 17th
of February 2019, Suhasini had not given a single dance recital at all. Apparently, she prepared for this program for 12 days. Incidentally, Sethumadhavan, who had done the make-up for the actress 43 years ago, had done the make-up for her for this event also. When asked about what her husband Mani Ratnam had to say for this, Suhasini says, “He was worried for me and kept saying there would not be Take 2.” The audience included dancers like Padma Subrahmanyam, Lakshmi Viswanathan, and Suhasini’s family.
