After his return to Tamil cinema back in 2016 with Devi, Prabhu Deva has mostly stuck to dance based films and also the odd horror and comedy film. He has signed up for a slew of films currently and will be having a busy year ahead. His first release of the year, the comedy entertainer Charlie Chaplin 2 bombed at the box office and sunk without a trace recently. Prabhu Deva's next release is expected to be Pon Manickavel, in which he plays a cop for the first time. The teaser of the film was launched and the ace dancer has gone for a complete image makeover portraying a stylish, righteous, no-nonsense cop. He plays the titular character - a cop who takes over a tough case and goes about it in a honest manner.
Nivetha Pethuraj plays the homely love interest of the hero. Prabhu Deva seems to have really liked the way Vijay pulled off the cop role in his blockbuster Theri (2016). One can see traces of Thalapathy’s style in Prabhu Deva’s performance. Suresh Chandra Menon seems to be the lead villain, in what is his return to a main character after last year’s Thaana Serndha Koottam.
Debutant AC Mugil has helmed Pon Manickavel and one feels that it is a risky, gutsy image changeover for Prabhu Deva. Will the audience accept him as a cop? Let’s wait and watch.
