After the blockbuster success of his Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, Mani Ratnam and his production house Madras Talkies have stayed rather quiet about the veteran’s largely awaited next project. While it is certain that the film is going to be the onscreen adaptation of Kalki’s epic novel Ponniyin Selvan, updates on the developments have been circulating far and wide.
While it was Thalapathy Vijay who first came in to get through the look test for the film, it has been revealed by close associates that he is no more a part of the project. As of now, Karthi, Jayam Ravi and Chiyaan Vikram are the frontrunners to play the lead roles. Mani Ratnam, who is now reading through the final draft of the film, is forced to wait until the end of this year as all the three stars are caught up with their current commitments.
Earlier, reports had also flown in that Aishwarya Rai and Amitabh Bachchan were called up for pivotal roles, but there is no official word on it yet. A clear statement is expected from Madras Talkies on the developments of the project, sometime during the second half of the year. All we can do is wait and hope for what will be one of Tamil cinema’s biggest and prestigious projects ever.
