We all know Mani Ratnam has been planning to make the Tamil literary novel Ponniyin Selvan into a movie for several years now. In 2010, he was close to making it but the project was shelved due to budget constraints. However, recently we reported that he has finally started work on it. The latest buzz was that Vijay Sethupathi opted out of the film because of his tight schedule and remuneration issues.
Now, our insider source reveals, “We are looking to replace Vijay Sethupathi with Karthi for this project. Talks are on with Karthi and it all seems very positive.” Karthi was the primary choice for Mani Ratnam after Vijay Sethupathi opted out. Now, it looks like he is close to giving his nod for this project!
Speculations are rife that Simbu and Jayam Ravi have also been cast to play pivotal roles in the film. However, Mani Ratnam has been tight-lipped about the project's details. Earlier, producer G Dhananjayan, in a tweet, confirmed that the film is indeed happening. He wrote, "'Puratchi Thalaivar' MGR tried, then our Kamal sir tried. Happy finally it will become a reality as a Magnum opus film by Mani Ratnam sir & as an epic web series by @soundaryaarajni soon. Best wishes to both. #PonniyinSelvan is the most awaited tale on screen. (sic)"
Apart from Mani Ratnam, Soundarya Rajinikanth, in association with MX Player, is also adapting Ponniyin Selvan into a web-series and it will be directed by debutant Sooriyaprathap.
In the past, MGR and Kamal Haasan had also tried to make Ponniyin Selvan into a movie but they faced a lot of difficulties and thus it never got made.
Written by Kalki, it is the story of Arulmozhivarman, who went on to become the Great King Raja Raja Chozhan. It is said that author Kalki took nearly 3 years to complete the novel, which is till date considered as one of the biggest epics in Tamil literature.
