Two months ago, Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu ventured into the multiplex business by launching his own wing AMB Cinemas in Kondapur, Telangana. The actor attended the grand opening of the complex, which brings the audience a luxury cinema viewing experience. Popular multiplex organizers Asian Cinemas struck a partnership with the actor in putting up this much-talked-about cinema union.
With smooth sails at the ticket counter and good talk all around, everything was set. But now, the multiplex has landed in legal trouble after it received a show cause notice from the Ranga Reddy district GST Commissionerate for violating GST norms. Reports suggest that the multiplex has been selling tickets at higher rates, which are not in line with the new rates which have been put into effect from the 1st of January 2019. As a result, the commissionerate has instructed the multiplex management to return the excess amount to the consumer welfare fund. On further study, it was revealed that many other multiplexes and single screens across Hyderabad and Secunderabad had received notices regarding GST violations.
Mahesh, who holds close to 20% of share in this venture, is yet to comment on the issue. The actor had earlier revealed that he plans to expand the multiplex chain to five more prominent locations across the state within the space of two years.
