Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati has long been embroiled in controversy as politicians and self-styled keepers of Rajput pride accused the film of changing history for an exciting script. As the release date nears, these voices are getting louder as are voices of condemnation from the industry. Amidst the controversy and threats, Deepika Padukone has been single-handedly attending the publicity events for Padmavati while other leads, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh have taken a backseat.
During a meeting with the press on Sunday, Shahid snidely remarked when asked when he will join Deepika for the promotions, “Why should I tell? Ask Deepika.” Shahid’s encrypted reply delivered between smiles is suggestive of the star’s slight negativity against the promotion strategy.

At a later episode when the star was asked about work relations with his co-stars by a leading magazine, he had a more polished democratic reply. “They’re both great. I think the cast of the film is fantastic. I don’t know when else a cast like this will come together in a subject like this with characters which have gone down in history with moments that are spectacular and a part of Indian history so to say. And I guess it’s thanks to Sanjay Leela Bhansali who has put everyone together. I don’t know when else a cast like this would come through. Of course, Deepika and Ranveer have been working from before and they’ve done great work together. I loved Bajirao Mastani and I loved everybody in the film."
Deepika in the meantime has been breezing through Mumbai in stately attires, busy with promotions. She too had a rueful comment about her co-star, “Shahid and I have known each other for so many years, but a special film like Padmavati brought us together onscreen."
While these co-stars manage to hide disconcert regally, we can’t wait to see Padmavati’s magnum opus on screens when it is released on December 1, 2017.
