When it comes to social media domination in India, Southern cinema seems to dominate Twitter. Bad luck Bollywood, you did your part. Whenever a film from Kollywood, Tollywood and other southern film industries makes news, it somehow manages to send Twitteratis in a tizzy. In its report on the most influential moments of 2017 and The Golden Tweet of 2017, Twitter announced that southern superstar Suriya Sivakumar bagged the latter. When Suriya unveiled the second poster of his upcoming movie – Thaana Serndha Kootam, it earned over 100,000 likes and 70,000 retweets from his 3.31 million followers.
Thaana Serndha Kootam is directed by Vignesh Shivn, and also stars Keerthy Suresh. This film will see both actors team up for the first time and ready for release during Pongal in 2018.

Suriya beat the likes received by Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan who also enjoy a huge fan following on the micro-blogging website.
Besides bagging the most retweeted tweet of this year, the south has reached the top ten spot for hashtag trends as well. According to reports and thanks to the controversy surrounding it, Mersal, starring Thalapathy Vijay received a whopping 1.7 million tweets in just three days, becoming the top hashtag trend in 2017.

Globally, however, the biggest honour went to the K-Pop band BTS. The group won the most award for the most retweeted and liked tweet in Asia. The tweet got a million in engagements, with over 7,86,000 likes and over 3,86,000 retweets.
The video shows Jungkook asleep while another bandmate sticks a French fry in his mouth. The group has over 10 million followers on Twitter and last month, the Guinness Book of Records awarded BTS for having the most Twitter engagements for a music group, averaging 2,52,000 retweets per tweet.
