The 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is shrouded in controversy as the Information & Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry dropped two movies, allegedly due to their offensive film tiles. Jury members Sujoy Ghosh, Apurva Asrani and Gyan Correa stepped down from the jury panel. However, amidst all the conundrum, the makers of Nude have released the trailer to their movie.
The film's trailer depicts the story of women who work as nude models. In the trailer, the characters use very few words and the story is communicated through evocative visuals. It also deals with how the artists struggle with hiding their profession from their loved ones.
The protagonist of the movie is an abused wife, played by Kalyanee Mular, who flees from her village with her son and goes to live with her aunt, played by Chhaya Kadam, in a Mumbai slum. She initially remains puzzled about her aunt’s occupation. Soon, she finds her way to Sir JJ School of Art where she finds the actual truth behind her aunt’s income.
Towards the end of the trailer, an artist, played by Naseeruddin Shah, says, “Clothes are meant to cover the body, not the soul and I attempt to seek the soul through my work.” S Durga and Nude were recommended for the Indian Panorama section of the IFFI by a 13-member jury, but were eventually dropped.
