Biopics are Bollywood’s latest obsession. A sure-fire way of leaving an impact on the box office is to make one on the most popular sportsperson. Latest among these personalities is cricket star and captain of the Indian women’s team, Mithali Raj. Owing to her remarkable performance during the finals against England at the Women’s World Cup, Raj won many fans even though India lost by nine runs.
Viacom 18 Motion Pictures has reportedly acquired rights for the film. “We are proud to be collaborating with the young and inspirational Mithali Dorai Raj, a name single-handedly responsible for bringing about a shift in the way women’s cricket team was perceived in our country,” Ajit Andhare of Viacom18 Motion Pictures said. It is still not confirmed who will play the role of Raj in the film. According to recent reports, actors Ranveer Singh and Shradha Kapoor will be playing Kapil Dev and Saina Nehwal, respectively in upcoming biopics.
Women’s cricket in India has long been overlooked by fans of the sport but the performance of the Indian team, led by Mithali Raj at the World Cup garnered considerable attention across the country. Raj believes that India reaching the finals of the World Cup heralds a new beginning for women’s cricket. “I am extremely happy with this association with Viacom18 Motion Pictures. Hoping that this movie inspires more people especially young girls to take up sports as a career,” Raj said in a statement. In 1999, Raj made her debut in cricket at the age of 16, and score her first century against Ireland, becoming the youngest woman to score a century in ODIs. Often compared to cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, she is also the first woman to score 6,000 runs in one-day international cricket. Raj was awarded the Arjuna award as well as the Padma Shri (fourth-highest civilian award) in 2015 for contribution to cricket.
