India may not be a land of mystics anymore but it sure is the land of the weird. We live in a country where you can get jailed for chewing expensive greenery, even if you are four-legged and come with a furry tail. Jail was the fate meted out to eight unfortunate donkeys for grazing on the jailers exorbitant greens in Uttar Pradesh.
The criminals in question hail from UP’s district of Orai and were kept in custody for four days under the directions of the Jail Superintendent, Orai District Jail, Sita Ram. Taking cue from Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, Ram had purchased the plants for beatification of the jail compound, reported DNA. However, he was in for a shock when the donkeys thought the expensive plants looked better in their digestive system. Total loss incurred due to the damages caused by the donkeys was reportedly Rs. 60, 000.

While grazing does not necessarily invite arrest under the Indian Penal Code, Ram thought conviction would oust their owner whose fault was to graze irresponsibly. When news spread, the owner, Kamlesh reached the police station but was told to ‘bail out’ his animals only after filling a bond on the affidavit for committing the 'crime' like any other criminal. The bail of the donkeys was finalized after a little political push came from local BJP leader Shkati Gahoi, much like any case in our country.
“I apologized and submitted an affidavit to the Jail Superintendent swearing in that his donkeys will never come near the jail in future. My donkeys were released only after that,” said Kamlesh. Their ecstatic feeling on being freed was well displayed as their happy hooves trotted out of the jail compound on Monday. While hailing from the bovine class in India can provide you some jurisdictional privileges in the name religion, this privilege sadly does not seem to be extended to donkeys in our country. For eight donkeys who dared to eat beyond their means, jail was the fate. We only wonder if an orange leash could have produced a better case for these donkeys.
