As India cheers for women's liberation from instant divorce in the form of talaq, shocking numbers emerge to show its practice in the community. Muslim women as per Census 2011 face twice the divorce rate of the national average. While some speculate it is the ease of obtaining divorce in the community, divorce much like other communities is still looked down upon. The men of the community on the other hand retain a divorce rate similar to the national average. While 5 in 1000 Muslim women get divorced, for the Hindu community it stands at 1.8 for every 1000 women. The difference in divorce rate for the two sexes show a certain bias towards women of the community.
