Following the recent attack on a Swiss couple in Uttar Pradesh, a German national was allegedly assaulted by a railway contractor in the eastern part of the state on Saturday. The accused person has been arrested by the police.
Holger Ereek had arrived at Sonbhadra to visit the Agori fort and was allegedly attacked at the Robertsgank railway station. But Aman Kumar, the accused, however alleges that it was the German who hit him first when he greeted him.
Speaking to NDTV, Kumar said, “I am innocent... the German national punched me when I said 'welcome to India' to him. He even spit on me."
“The tourist was immediately rushed to hospital,” railway police sub-inspector Harikesh Ram Azad said over the phone from Sonbhadra to Hindustan Times.Two weeks back, a Swiss couple visiting Agra was attacked by youths and suffered serious injuries. Quentin Jeremy Clerc suffered a fractured skull while Marie Droxz had a broken arm. They were chased by the youths who hit them with sticks and stones while they were on their way to Fatehpur Sikri, a popular tourist destination.
Post their ordeal, the couple lay on the road, wounded while passersby took videos on their phones. According to reports, External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and Tourism Minister KJ Alphons wrote to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath confronting him on safety in Uttar Pradesh. On his visit to the Taj Mahal, Yogi was seen clicking photos with foreign tourists.
