Mumbai now boasts of no silence zones as all of its 1500 silence zones have been de-notified following amendments to the Noise Pollution Rules of 2000. The amendments were announced in 2016 and came into force in August 11, 2017. Despite the passage of one year in between the state government has done little to notify new areas complying with the amended rules. While the High Court questioned the state government's intention behind giving loudspeakers in the city a free-run, the government dismissed it by saying it took time as it is in 'transitory phase'. With Ganesh Chaturthis a few days away we can only imagine the impeding decibel levels without a law to protect us from its abuse.
