22-year-old Haryanvi singer Harshita Dahiya was shot dead on Tuesday by unknown assailants at Chamrara village in Haryana's Panipat district. The incident took place at around 4 pm on Tuesday when Harshita was on her way back home in Delhi after her performance at a function in the village, around 86 km away. She was in a car along with a male singer, Pradeep of Rathdhana village of Sonipat district, her assistant Nisha of Ballabgarh and the car driver Sandeep, a resident of Gumar village in Sonipat district. When they reached between Chamrara and Kakoda villages, a black car stopped their vehicle and two unknown assailants open fired before fleeing the scene.
"When she was returning, a black car overtook her vehicle near Chamrara and forced it to stop," Panipat DSP Desh Raj said.
The two unidentified youth asked the driver and Harshita's two companions to step out before they shot her in the car. The assailants fired seven bullets, out of which six bullets hit Harshita's forehead and neck, resulting into her on the spot death. The youths who are yet to be identified fled the scene immediately after killing her. A murder case had been registered and investigations are underway, the DSP said. Her body was sent for an autopsy to the Panipat civil hospital.
Harshita had recently posted a mobile video on social media, in which she alleged that she was receiving death threats. In the same video, she also mentioned that she was not afraid. It is not known yet if she had alerted the police regarding the threat to her life. She said, “I am getting calls from Haryanvi artists threatening me that I should reach a compromise and delete the video, otherwise I have to face the consequences. In a bit, I’ll put that number and the screenshot on Facebook, so that you get to know who it is. You can check it on Truecaller. I’ll also make an official complaint and eventually, everyone will get to know who was threatening your sister.”
“I didn’t make any personal comments, I just said what I thought was right and if the people are still threatening me then I must tell them that I am not afraid of anybody and I won’t delete the video. That’s what I want to say in this live video that what’s wrong is always wrong. They can do what they want. Why should I delete any live video? I am a Jattni and I am not scared of these threats. I don’t fear death and I will not delete the videos,” she added.Harshita who specialised in Haryana folk songs was living in Narela in New Delhi. She was known for her Haryanvi 'Ragini' songs and was also a dancer. Preliminary investigation revealed that she filed a complaint of rape against her brother-in-law, who is in jail now. She was also a witness in the murder case of her mother, who was killed a few months ago in Delhi. Reports also suggest that the police is suspecting a gangster-related to the singer, who is currently in the Tihar Jail in Delhi.
