According to the South Andaman district authorities, South Andaman residents will be jailed if they fail to construct a loo in their homes by the end of December, 2017. The ultimatum comes after the direction from Prime Minister’s Office to make the Island Open Defecation Free (ODF).
In a press conference, the district commissioner of South Andaman, Udit Prakash Rai, urged the South Andaman citizens to immediately construct a toilet in their home. Strict action would be taken against those who fail to comply. He also said there is a provision to put violators behind bars.
On funding, Rai said that many have already received the money. However, the thousands who are yet to be paid for the construction would receive it within a week, he added.
The district commissioner said, “It’s a great initiative by the Government of India and for better health also it’s very necessary, I request all the South Andaman Residents to co-operate with the District Administration and make this campaign a success.”
The capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Port Blair has already been declared ‘Open Defecation Free Region’ on October 2, 2017.
