The humble khichidi is set to be bestowed national glory. Next time you stir one up in your kitchen, you might just take more pride cooking it for it is now our national food. The supple lentil porridge will no longer be reserved as a convalescent meal for the sick for it will be unveiled as our country’s national food at the World Food India event in Delhi on November 4. It will collectively represent Indian cuisine at the international event sharing platform with cuisines of Japan, Italy, Denmark and others.
Khichidi was chosen to have the true Indian flavor as it was justified as being eaten across India but both rich and poor. Its penetrative reach across Indian kitchens will also make the organisers of the event attempt to cook 800 kg of the 'one pot' lentil rice to put it on the Guinness World Records for the largest khichdi ever to be cooked.
