She's an actress, producer, philanthropist and mother - which makes Eva Longoria, 44, one busy lady. But she still found the time to take to the Cannes catwalk last month for L'Oréal Paris, with the cutest accessory of all with her - son Santiago, 10 months. The Desperate Housewives star certainly has the art of juggling babies, career and family life down to a T - so we caught up with her to find out what her secret is (spoiler: it might be Chardonnay!).
Congrats on becoming a mum to Santiago! What are you enjoying most?
Just being with my son and seeing the laughter that comes from the newness of him. It’s an amazing joy to watch him discover the world. There’s a new surprise every day.
Picked up any parenting tips from your best pal Victoria Beckham?
Victoria has about 80 kids! We joke all the time that she’s the woman who lives in a shoe, she had so many kids she didn’t know what to do. What I love about Victoria is how involved she is with her kids. Something I’ve learned from her is to be really creative with kids. She’s a really great organizer of activities.
Did anything take you by surprise about motherhood?
My passion for activism has become intensified since having a son. I didn't realize the moment he was born I would be like, ‘Wow the world has got to be a better place. Oh my gosh, the environment!’ Everything now just feels more urgent.
How do you balance career and family?
I didn’t really stop working, I did Dora The Explorer when Santi was six weeks old. I was shooting in Australia with him, breastfeeding. I’m very lucky - women juggle careers and family all over the world, and they don’t get to take the baby to the office. I’m so lucky I’ve been able to continue to do what I want and bring him along for the journey.
Sounds like parenthood hasn’t slowed you down...
I don’t think children should stunt your ambition. It’s only energized me to want to make my son proud of me.
You were back at the Cannes Film Festival for L’Oreal, how have you prepped for the red carpet?
I’ve been working out like a crazy person. When I had Santi I really let my body take its time to relax into motherhood. I’m so thankful to my body for creating this little human so I wasn’t in a rush to get back in shape. Then I decided ‘OK, he’s almost a year now, let’s get back to work’. I usually work out seven days a week, I’m really into heavy weight lifting. As we get older we need more strength training. Running for an hour doesn’t have the same effect it used to.
Which beauty products do you swear by?
I’m obsessed with L’Oréal’s Revitalift Filler Ampoules, which are little capsules of hyaluronic acid. I have them when I travel and take them everywhere. It’s a miracle worker. It really hydrates me at night, so when I wake up my skin is smoother. My skin and my hair are both drier since my pregnancy. I like Kérastase and L'Oreal Botanicals to put the moisture back in my hair.
Do you have a top beauty tip?
Sunblock, sunblock, sunblock. Wear it every day under your make-up, and wear foundations that have SPF, especially if you’re young. People don’t understand how important it is to take care of your skin really early on, because the skin you look after in your 20s will be the skin that looks good in your 40s. I was not great when I was younger. I was under the misconception that because I was Latin my skin could take more sun. All skin needs sun protection, though.
What is your signature fragrance?
I’m not a perfume wearer. I used to wear my own fragrance when I had one, I created it because I am allergic to a lot of scents. Even shampoos and creams with fragrance can really bother me, so I usually get unscented beauty products.
How do you pamper yourself?
With a massage. I get them once a week and sometimes twice, depending on what I’m doing. I’m really hard on my body; I’m exercising, I’m working, I’m directing, I’m always on my feet, so this helps. I also get chiropractic treatments; many illnesses come from your spine being misaligned.
What's your make-up bag essential?
I can’t live without my L’Oréal Voluminous Carbon Black mascara. I love the big thick brush, and it’s the blackest black formula. I have very dark eyes, so I like dark mascara.
How long do you spend getting ready for a night out?
Oh gosh, I’m super fast – just 30 minutes and out the door. I usually let my hair air dry, as I have a really nice natural wave, and then I give it some volume with an Enzo Milano styling wand.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Wine! I like a Bordeaux or Cabernet and, in the summer, I’ll be having a really crisp Chardonnay.
Which women do you think are beautiful?
I’m obsessed with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Oh my gosh! Her style, her make-up…Whether she’s on the red carpet or just working out with her hair in a ponytail, she looks stunning.
How would you describe your style?
Classic. I like a good blazer, good trousers. I love a crisp, white blouse. I'm not very trendy.
Do you have a favourite shop or designer?
Victoria Beckham! She’s my best friend, and her clothes are just beautiful. All my tuxedos are Victoria’s, and her dresses are so easy and flattering.
What is your favourite item of clothing?
It changes all the time. Right now I’m really into these high-waisted, baggy Givenchy cargo pants. They’re just super casual; you can dress them up with heels, and I bought them in every colour.
Who is your style icon?
I love Salma Hayek’s style. She always seems so perfectly put together, and she has a beautiful spirit too – like there’s a light shining from inside her.
