Politics is creeping into US classrooms like never before. A school in the US state of Massachusetts has erected a tombstone bearing the name of US President Donald Trump for a Halloween-themed fundraiser. The tombstone was part of a game at a fundraising party organized by the school’s parent-teacher organization in West Parish Elementary School, Gloucester. This isn’t the first time someone has sought to prematurely bury Donald Trump. During last year’s presidential election campaign, a tombstone bearing his name was erected on New York’s Central Park which was later removed.
The photo of the tombstone attracted considerable attention online. Predictably the reaction broke down along partisan lines with numerous people labelling the prop a 'disgrace' while others said it was 'not a big deal.'
A number of parents sent pictures of the tombstone to Massachusetts Republican Party committeewoman, Amanda Orlando Kesterson, who denounced it as 'disgusting' in an angry post on Facebook.
She wrote, “I find it absolutely despicable that the PTO of one of our local elementary schools would bring this political agenda before our children. The parents or teachers responsible for this disgusting display should claim responsibility publicly and apologize publicly as well. If it was an employee of our school system, I expect Dr Safier to deal appropriately with this individual for this political ploy which has no place in our schools.”
She added, “Donald Trump is our president and he deserves respect. We should teach our children that the office of the president ALWAYS deserves respect. Our school system is not the place for nasty political agendas.”We are not sure if Donald Trump deserves respect or not, but burying a live person’s tombstone for Halloween doesn’t seem quite right.
