Are you on that time of the month? If you are going to visit Tel Aviv in Israel anytime soon, then this is a bloody interesting story for you! Anna Loulou bar in Tel Aviv, Israel is offering flat 25% discount to customers who are on their period. Moran Barir and Dana Etgar, the two women owners of the bar, said they want to do women a ‘favour’ with their new ‘Bloody Hour’, a happy hour for days of menstruation. The magic figure 25% was also chosen thoughtfully because women usually menstruate for 25% of their lives.
Okay, so how does this work? The discount will apply only from Monday to Wednesday and Saturday. The bar says on its Facebook page, “It’s based on trust. Just like that. We believe you! You come to the bar, say you are on your period/flow/cycle.”
The intention is to create an environment for women to talk about it and to raise awareness on menstruation. In a report published in Haaretz newspaper, Barir told that the idea struck her when she was ordering a drink at the bar one day. ‘I sat at the bar and ordered wine. The bartender couldn't remember whether I’d asked for red or for white so I told him simply, “Here’s how you’ll remember: I’m on my period, so bring me red,” she said.
Menstruation definitely makes many men uncomfortable. It’s unfortunate that a lot of men (and women) are embarrassed to discuss this topic. However, pubs are shared by men and women, and they both equally enjoy there. So, initiating a small change in a pub seems like a giant leap towards normalizing menstruation. But, will Anna Loulou end the stigma, remains to be the big question. It’s high time that we end the taboo and accept a natural process, naturally!
