WhatsApp’s latest Beta version has been released with a payment option that appears on the attachments list. The payments are to be made by UPI or Unified Payments Interface. The report was first published by Gizmo Times who noted that the account shows the list of banks and accounts that are linked, however the account is not getting added. This could indicate that the feature is in its final stage of implementation on the app.
Tapping on Payment takes you to a page where you can link your account. If you do not have a UPI account then you’ll have to get that done on the UPI app or from the website of your bank.
If this feature is implemented in the final version of the app it could easily be the most popular way for people to send and receive payments. WhatsApp’s intentions of integrating UPI with the app has been well known for a while. Though apps like Paytm and Google Tez has picked up pace in the country, the availability of UPI payments on WhatsApp will be a big advantage for Facebook, which owns WhatsApp.
The Beta version with the Payment feature is currently available to only a few beta users. FoneArena reports that both the sender as well as the receiver needs to have the Payments feature to be able to transfer amounts through the app.
Since UPI was launched, a number of manufacturers such as Samsung, Zomato, Google were looking forward to include it on their products.
