We are in 2019 and social media is the demand as well as the need of the time. Social media influencing has become a legit, full-time livelihood for many who invest in their social media handles and use them to endorse products and services. But it goes without saying that crucial social and political opinions and information need to be free of bias. Not that it always happens, though. When you follow your favourite celebrity, it might not even occur to you that the opinions promoted aren't independent.
Cobra Post, an independent media outlet ran a sting operation exposing over 30 prominent celebrities from the entertainment industry who agreed to generate posts supporting political parties, in lieu of money. The list includes shockingly familiar names such as singers Abhijit Bhattacharya, Kailash Kher, Baba Sehgal, Bollywood actors Tisca Chopra, Jackie Shroff, Shakti Kapoor, Koena Mitra, Sonu Sood, Rohit Roy, Minissha Lamba, Evelyn Sharma, Rajpal Yadav, Shreyas Talpade, and TV actors Deepshikha Nagpal, Krushna Abhishek, Aman Varma.
In the video, reporters from Cobra Post introduce themselves as representatives of a political party who're seeking favours from the public figures and their powerful social media reach ahead of the 2019 Loksabha elections. All the actors approached are seen readily discussing the offers and none seems reluctant! When the reporters reached out to Shreyas Talpade for a 'marketing' strategy on behalf of Aam Aadmi Party, he keenly took part in the discussion and even explains that he is not directly involved with any political party.
Another popular actor Vivek Oberoi who is incidentally working on a political film right now was also approached. He reacts with a 'very nice' when the reporters pretending to be PR representatives clarify how they're planning to promote the BJP.
Sonu Sood was offered to promote all the 'good works' done by BJP and even gives an example himself.
