Hampi Vandalism: Raveena Tandon, Riteish Deshmukh condemn attack on heritage site

Hampi, a UNESCO world heritage site situated in Karnataka, is a strong tourist attraction of the state as well as India. Not long ago, the New York Times listed it as a part of their 52 must-go sites in the world.  Hence, when a video of a group of men damaging a stone pillar at Hampi went viral, it immediately caused immense outrage all over the internet. In the video, three men are seen pushing the pillar down on the floor, causing it to break.

Karnataka Water Resources Minister D K Shivakumar ensured action against the culprits and also stated that the police has been directed to take necessary actions. Shivakumar, incidentally, is also the Minister in-charge of Ballari district and Hampi falls under his jurisdiction. “We will not tolerate any such act of causing damage to historical sites,” he said, reports Indian Express. As expected, this has caused a number of public figures to condemn the incident.  Bollywood actors Riteish Deshmukh and Raveena Tandon too voiced against it.

This is not the first instance of vandalism that Hampi is witnessing.  A couple of years ago,  a Shivalinga situated amid the Tungabhadra river was found damaged.
