Not long ago the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha was embroiled in controversy after their leader Pooja Shakun Pandey, accompanied by a number of other members, did quite a recreation of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. She was seen shooting at Gandhi's effigy, after which artificial blood poured down. The incident took place in Aligarh on January 30 which happens to be Gandhi's death anniversary. At the same event, Gandhi's killer Nathuram Godse's (who also belonged to Hindu Mahasabha) statue was also garlanded and sweets were generously distributed.
The incident sparked strong reactions. Around a week after the incident, Pooja was arrested in Aligarh. Three more people involved in the incident were already arrested last week. Pooja's husband Ashok Pandey was also taken into police custody, reports NDTV. The police have filed a criminal case against a total of 12 people involved in the shocking incident. It may be noted that Hindu Mahasabha celebrates Gandhi's death anniversary as Shaurya Divas. From this year onward, they announced, the recreation of assassination would be held as an annual event.
This is not the first time Pooja has found herself surrounded by controversies. The National Secretary of Hindu Mahasabha earlier irked debates when she spat out some more hatred for Gandhi. "If I was born before Godse, I would have killed Gandhi with my own hands. He was responsible for the division of India and killings of several lakh of Hindus during Partition. I will murder anyone who talked about further division of the country," she had said.
