Today, they are standing shoulder to shoulder with men, hold important positions in the government and decide the fate of the country. History has witnessed the brilliance of women in politics over the years, be it Queen Elizabeth or the former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. These are some globally renowned politicians who have contributed to the development of the country and their work can never be overlooked.
In our country, women have ventured into every possible sector and Politics is no different. Seven times Member of Parliament and three times Member of the Legislative Assembly, Sushma Swaraj, is the Union Minister Of External Affairs of India in the BJP government. She is the second woman to hold this position after Indira Gandhi. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the official face of the current government, Sushma fills in and has been the face of the government on many international platforms as well. The 67-year old BJP leader is not just a hit on the political pitch but is a favourite with the youth as well, thanks to her active Twitter presence. Daily, she receives tweets from people seeking help and she replies to them.
Actor-turned-politician Smriti Irani is a Member of Parliament and was elected to the Rajya Sabha from the state of Gujarat. She is the current Textiles Minister in the Government of India. While in her days as an actor, Smriti was widely known for her acting abilities and today as a politician she is known for her savage replies to people on social media. Being the modern-day politician, she is a big fan of memes and is often seen sharing same from her social media handles.
The latest entry to the Indian politics from the Gandhi family, Priyanka Gandhi officially joined the INC. She currently is the General Secretary of the AICC in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh and serves as Trustee of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. While over the years she has been seen campaigning for Congress, this year she will be doing it officially and will be playing an important role in the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.
Also known as ‘Didi’ out of respect, Mamta Banerjee is the Chief Minister of West Bengal and is the first woman to hold the office. She founded the All India Trinamool Congress in 1997 and became chairperson, after separating from the Indian National Congress. She dethroned the previous government which was in power for 34 years in Bengal. Apart from carrying out her duties as the CM, she is also in charge of nine key departments of the government of West Bengal, including Home, Health and Family Welfare, Land and Land Reforms, Information and Cultural Affairs, Minority Affairs and Madrassah Education, Agriculture, Power and Home (Personnel and Administrative Reforms) departments. Didi recently made heads turn when she was directly at logger heads with the central government after the CBI had sent its officers to arrest the Kolkatta Police commissioner. Mamta stood her ground and didn’t let it happen.
After former Prime Minister of India, Nirmala Sitaraman is the second woman who is serving as Defence Minister of India. She has also served as Minister of Commerce and Industry earlier in Modi the Government. She has served as Member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, since 2016.
