Navjot Singh Sidhu has been in the news for the past couple of days thanks to his controversial statement at a media interaction after the Pulwama attack. While speaking to media after the horrific incident, Sidhu said, "For a handful of people, can you blame the entire nation and can you blame an individual? It (the attack) is a cowardly act and I condemn it firmly. Violence is always condemnable and those who did it must be punished.” Sidhu seems to have dug a pit for himself with this remark. He has been facing a ton of backlash on social media, including demands to sack him from the Punjab cabinet. The backlash, however, has not shaken him. The cricketer-turned-politician says he stands by his statement.
While speaking to media on Sunday, Sidhu said, “Be it tomorrow, today or day after, I will stand by my statement. Can a few terrorists ruin the peace of the country? Whoever has done this should be punished. But it should not be that someone does it and someone else is punished. Will you be an enemy with a child who is in his mother’s womb? Will you be an enemy with a 90-year-old man? Will you be an enemy with a two-year-old child? When did I say don’t punish the terrorist? Give them such a severe punishment that their generations remember it.”
Sidhu’s earlier statement landed him in a whirlwind of controversies. Social media is demanding that he be removed from The Kapil Sharma Show and even removed from his position of political power.
