Mahatma Gandhi, as we all know, played a big part in India’s independence movement. Known as the Father of the Nation, he was a lawyer, politician, activist, writer and eventually the leader of the nationalist movement in India, in our fight against the British rule. Gandhi’s philosophies are acclaimed globally, for he managed to drive home to people, that violence isn’t always the answer. His principle of non-violent protests helped him find political success. It so happens that 2019 is the 150th birth year of the late leader. As such, the 2019 Republic Day celebrations will be based on the ‘Gandhi’ theme.
According to reports, the railways is set to showcase a tableau which shows the "transformation of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to Mahatma Gandhi". It will be known as Mohan Se Mahatma and will be showing the famous incident of 1893 when Gandhi was thrown out of a train compartment meant for ‘Europeans only.’ The incident occurred at the Pietermaritzburg railway station in South Africa. Incidentally, the South African president Cyril Ramaphosa will be present as chief guest during the parade.
