US President Donald Trump brought an end to the longest partial government shutdown in history, dropping his plans of immediate funding to construct a wall along the US-Mexican border. The announcement was made from the White House and marked the defeat of Trump and for the time being, paused a row between the Democrats and the Republicans – one which left over 800,000 federal employees without pay. Though the reopening of the government is, as per Trump, temporary, it is being hailed as a victory by many Americans.
Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer told the media that he hoped Trump "learned his lesson." Meanwhile, when describing the shutdown being called off, several reporters used the word ‘caved’ and Merriam-Webster even reported that there’s been a 1500 per cent spike in the search for the meaning of that word. Reports also mentioned that Trump’s poll numbers have taken a hit, going down to 37 per cent. Though Trump caved in without getting his $5.7 billion required to build the wall, he threatened of a new shutdown and even a state of emergency if he doesn’t get what he wants in three weeks’ time.
#TrumpCaved is now trending on social media, with several people posting memes and vilifying the president left, right and centre. At the same time, there are many who are praising Nancy Pelosi, who is the Democratic speaker of the House. When Trump forced the Democrats to give in to his demands, she refused.
The Democrats believed that Trump would be blamed by voters for the chaos once the government shuts. It turns out they were right. As of now, there are questions over whether or not Trump will be re-invited to deliver the State of the Union address in Congress next week.
