We’re just nine days away from the interim budget and there’s news that Piyush Goyal, who is the Union Railways Minister, will have temporary charge of the Finance and Corporate Affairs ministries. Goyal will be filling the void left by Arun Jaitley, who is currently in the US for medical treatment. According to a report on NDTV, Jaitley has undergone surgery and may not present the budget, which is scheduled for February 1.
For Goyal, this won’t be unfamiliar territory, since he had already swapped for Jaitley when the latter had to go through a kidney transplant. Back then, Goyal was in charge of the finance ministry for three months. Back in 2017, Goyal was made a member of the parliament for the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra. Prior to that, he was the National Treasurer of the Bharatiya Janata Party. During the 2014 elections, Goyal was in charge of the advertising and publicity campaigns, since he also headed BJP’s Information Communication Campaign Committee.
As for Goyal’s alma mater, he was ranked second in India as a Chartered Accountant. He also ranked second in the Law division of the Mumbai University. Between 2001 and 2004, he was on the board of the State Bank of India and between 2002 and 2004, he was a government nominee for Bank of Baroda. Suffice to say, Goyal has a lot of experience in managing finances.
