One of the most awaited Badminton tournaments, All England Open Badminton Championships 2019, is all set to kick start from Wednesday, March 6. The tournament was the unofficial world title back in the 1970s when legendary Prakash Padukone won it for the first time followed by Gopichand winning it in 2001. Since then there has been a lull as no Indian has won the prestigious championship. India has high hopes from the top-seeded trio of PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth and Saina Nehwal as they are expected to repeat the achievements of Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand by winning the prestigious title and break the 18-year-old wait.
The 5-day long action will see some of the world's best players compete against each other in this epic battle of shuttlers. A total of 155 matches have been planned in the tournament that will see over 50 hours of on-court action. The total prize value for the championship is $1,000,000 where the singles winners will get prize money of $ 70,000 while the Doubles winners will be handed over $ 74,000.
Talking about the clashes, Saina will start her tournament against Scotland's Kristy Gilmour, Sindhu will compete against former world no 2 Sung Ji Hyun of South Korea. K Srikant will lock horns with Frenchman Brice Leverdez in the first round whereas Sameer Verma will start his tournament against the former world champion and world no.1 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark.
