Former India player and Chairman of the Delhi & Districts Cricket Association Amit Bhandari was going about his own business at St Stephen’s College on February 10. Out of nowhere, a bunch of goons armed with hockey sticks, bats and rods descended on him. The attackers were reportedly sent by U-23 player Anuj Dedha, who failed to make it to the selection trials for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. When Bhandari and his colleagues tried to retaliate, they threatened to shoot Bhandari.
As per reports, the DDCA plans to impose a life ban on Dedha and will probe situations where selectors may be forced to choose players for a team. “I agree with Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir’s suggestion and we will be banning Anuj for life,” DDCA president Rajat Sharma told Times of India. We did a social media sweep of Dedha and found him on Facebook.
From the look of it, Dedha loves to stay fit, as is evidenced by his photos at the gym. A couple of comments on his recent profile images attracted the wrath of trolls, condemning him for attacking Bhandari. Moving on to his friend list, we noted that he’s friends with quite a few DDCA officials and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
Meanwhile, many former cricketers including Gautam Gambhir, Sourav Ganguly and Arun Lal condemned the attack. Lal was quoted by Cricket Country as saying that selectors being pressurized is not new. "Selectors being pressurised for selection is nothing new… Sometimes you are pressurised by a minister, sometimes by officials. Even I had faced similar issues when I was the captain. But never had it turned into violence… This is sheer violence,” he said.
